Kalos region

Kalos region in the Pokémon world.

The Kalos region is one of the main regions featured in the Pokémon series, introduced in Pokémon X and Y, which were released in 2013.

Kalos is inspired by real-world France, featuring diverse landscapes such as bustling cities, lush forests, towering mountains, and coastal areas.

Kalos, with its distinct star-shaped outline, is bordered by the ocean to the west and northwest, while mountain ranges define its eastern and southern edges. This geographical layout creates three distinct divisions: Central Kalos, Coastal Kalos, and Mountain Kalos, each with unique characteristics in terrain and Pokémon species.

Central Kalos, situated in the southern and central regions, features expansive forested plains intersected by rivers and characterized by minimal elevation changes. It hosts numerous walled towns, old castles, and châteaus, including significant landmarks like Vaniville Town, Santalune City, part of Lumiose City, and the opulent Parfum Palace.

Coastal Kalos lines the western seaboard, offering a narrow strip nestled between mountains and the ocean. Its landscape varies from rugged rocky shores in the southwest to lush beaches and forests in the northwest. Human settlements predominantly hug the coastline, with notable locations such as Reflection Cave, Geosenge Town, and Shalour City, home to the Tower of Mastery.

Mountain Kalos occupies the eastern expanse, characterized by extensive mountain ranges and cooler temperatures, often blanketed in snow. A marshy, reputedly haunted area lies to the north. Despite the rugged terrain, settlements thrive, featuring landmarks like the industrial Kalos Power Plant amidst harsh wastelands, the Poké Ball Factory in Laverre City, and the prestigious Pokémon League.

The Kalos Pokémon League is located at the summit of Victory Road. Trainers must battle their way through the region’s eight Gym Leaders to qualify for the Pokémon League Championship.

Kalos introduced the concept of Mega Evolution, a temporary transformation that certain Pokémon can undergo during battle, greatly increasing their power and sometimes altering their appearance. Kalos is home to several Legendary Pokémon, including Xerneas (the mascot of Pokémon X), Yveltal (the mascot of Pokémon Y), and Zygarde. These Pokémon play important roles in the region’s lore and storyline.

Kalos is home to a wide variety of Pokémon species, both native to the region and introduced from other regions. Trainers travel throughout Kalos to capture and train Pokémon, participating in battles and contests along the way.
