Ice type

Ice type Pokémon icon

In the Pokémon world, Ice-type is one of the eighteen elemental Pokémon types that Pokémon and their moves can have.

Ice-type Pokémon are known for their chilling presence and mastery over the cold.

They are characterized by their icy appearance and association with cold climates. They often resemble creatures adapted to freezing environments, such as icebergs, glaciers, or arctic animals like seals and polar bears.

Ice type characteristics

Ice-type Pokémon possess unique strengths and weaknesses that shape their effectiveness in battles.

Strengths

Ice-type moves are known for their high base power, making Ice-type Pokémon formidable attackers. Moves like Ice Beam, Blizzard, and Ice Punch can deal heavy damage to a wide range of opponents, especially those weak to Ice-type attacks.

Ice-type Pokémon often have access to coverage moves of other types, such as Water, Flying, and Ground, providing them with versatility in battles and allowing them to counter a variety of opponents effectively.

Some Ice-type moves have a chance to freeze the opponent solid, temporarily immobilizing them and preventing them from taking any action. This can be a powerful tool for Ice-type Pokémon to incapacitate their opponents and gain a strategic advantage in battles.

Weaknesses

Ice-type Pokémon are weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel-type moves. These weaknesses leave them susceptible to attacks from Pokémon of these types, making them less effective in battles against opponents with these move types.

While Ice-type Pokémon excel in offense, they often suffer from poor defensive stats, particularly in physical defense. This makes them vulnerable to direct physical attacks, especially from opponents with high Attack stats or super effective moves.

Ice-type Pokémon are particularly vulnerable to the entry hazard Stealth Rock, which deals damage to Pokémon switching in based on their weaknesses. Since Ice-types are weak to Rock-type moves, Stealth Rock can severely limit their longevity in battles.

Chart explanation

Ice-type Pokémon benefit from the Hail weather condition, which summons a hailstorm that damages all Pokémon on the battlefield except those with the Ice-type ability Ice Body or the move Hail. This weather condition enhances the power of Ice-type moves and provides passive recovery for Ice-type Pokémon with Ice Body.

In the Pokémon games, Ice-type Pokémon Trainers often appear as Gym Leaders or Elite Four members, specializing in Ice-type battles. They present challenges to Trainers seeking to earn their badges or advance in the Pokémon League.

Some of the most powerful and iconic Pokémon in the franchise are Ice-type Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, such as Articuno, Regice, and Kyurem. These Pokémon possess immense strength and play significant roles in the Pokémon lore.

Ice type moves

Ice-type moves are known for their chilling effect and ability to freeze opponents solid. These Ice-type moves offer a variety of options for Ice-type Pokémon to freeze opponents, deal heavy damage, and outmaneuver opponents with their icy powers. Trainers often incorporate these moves into their strategies to maximize the effectiveness of their Ice-type Pokémon and overcome their opponents with sheer coldness.

Concluding with Generation IX, there are 33 Ice-type moves, constituting 3.53% of all moves (excluding situational Ice-type moves). Ice ranks as the third rarest type, following Flying, Ground, and Dragon, and preceding Bug, Ghost, and Fairy. Before Generation IV adjustments, all damaging Ice-type moves were exclusively special, but their nature may now be physical depending on the specific move.
