Hoenn region

Hoenn region in the Pokémon world.

The Hoenn region, situated to the southwest of the Kanto and Johto regions, is renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity.

The Hoenn region draws inspiration from the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu.

Unlike the color or plant-based naming conventions seen in Kanto and Johto, most of Hoenn’s cities are named by combining two words (“Little Root”, “Fort Tree”, “Ever Grande,” etc.).

Its expansive seas, including the vast Hoenn Ocean and the intricate water routes, make it a unique setting for both aquatic and land-based adventures. Hoenn boasts several prominent cities and towns, each with its own distinct culture and architecture, such as bustling metropolises like Slateport City and rustic towns like Littleroot Town.

Hoenn is an expansive region with diverse landscapes, including lush forests like Petalburg Woods and the Fortree City treetop village, expansive deserts such as the Route 111 desert, volcanic areas like Mt. Chimney and the Jagged Pass, and underwater areas accessible through Dive, like the Seafloor Cavern.

The region is divided into several islands connected by bridges and routes, with notable landmarks such as the Weather Institute, the Abandoned Ship, and the Sky Pillar.

It appears that Hoenn boasts a warmer climate compared to other regions, resembling an equatorial climate. This suggests its probable location closer to the equator than other regions. Across the mainland, a diverse range of weather phenomena is observed. In the northwest, ashes perpetually descend around Mt. Chimney. The arid desert at the region’s center suffers from relentless, severe sandstorms. Moving towards the northeastern areas, frequent rainfall nourishes the rainforests and tall grasslands.

Professor Birch, who serves as the Pokémon Professor in Littleroot Town and is renowned for his expertise in Pokémon habitats and distribution within the Hoenn region, extends the opportunity for Trainers embarking on their journey through the expansive Hoenn region to choose their first partner Pokémon from among Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip.

Hoenn is known for its legendary Pokémon, including Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza, which play significant roles in the region’s storyline.

Trainers in Hoenn embark on a journey to challenge eight Gym Leaders, each specializing in a different type of Pokémon. Along the way, they encounter two villainous teams, Team Aqua and Team Magma, who seek to exploit the region’s legendary Pokémon to further their own agendas. The Hoenn region also introduces the concept of Pokémon Contests, where Trainers showcase their Pokémon’s beauty and talents in captivating performances.

The original Hoenn-based games, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, were released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002. They were later remade for the Nintendo 3DS as Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in 2014, featuring updated graphics, mechanics, and additional content while retaining the core storyline of the Hoenn region.

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the towns, cities, and areas of the Hoenn region host a population totaling 598. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, this count rises to 694. Initially the largest region by population in Generation III, it now stands as the sixth largest in Generation VIII.
