Giovanni
Giovanni is a significant figure in the Pokémon world, known as the enigmatic leader of Team Rocket and the Gym Leader of Viridian City. As the Viridian City Gym Leader, Giovanni specialized in Ground-type Pokémon, however, his overarching scheme involves amassing a collection of rare Pokémon spanning various types. He awards the Earth Badge to Trainers who manage to defeat him in battle.

Giovanni, the primary antagonist of Kanto, plays a dual role in the games. He’s the notorious leader of Team Rocket, the region’s first criminal organization, while also holding a secret identity. Underneath his guise as a respected businessman and the Gym Leader of Viridian City, he covertly orchestrated Team Rocket’s operations, aiming to exploit and control Pokémon for his own gain.
Despite his façade as a legitimate Gym Leader, his true allegiance lay with Team Rocket, where he plotted to dominate the Pokémon world through any means necessary.
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Giovanni’s role remains largely unchanged. However, defeating him in the Gym battle rewards players with TM26 (Earthquake) instead of TM27 (Fissure). In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, his storyline receives a slight expansion compared to his initial appearance.
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, a faction of Team Rocket seeks to revive the organization. Additionally, the Celebi event sheds light on Giovanni’s activities during the three-year gap between Generation I/III and Generation II/IV.
In Black 2 and White 2, Giovanni returns in the Pokémon World Tournament, substituting for Blue, who competes in the Champions Tournament instead.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, an alternate universe version of Giovanni emerges as the leader of Team Rainbow Rocket.

Unlike other leaders of criminal organizations, Giovanni is a recurring character throughout the Pokémon anime, appearing from Pokémon the Series: The Beginning to Pokémon Journeys: The Series. He maintains contact with Team Rocket’s trio and occasionally appears in person, particularly in “Pokémon the Series: Black & White,” where he directly opposes protagonists.

Pokémon Origins mini-series
In the third episode he clashed with Red’s Charizard using his formidable Nidoqueen, effortlessly triumphing before making a swift getaway via helicopter. Giovanni made another appearance, this time resuming his role as the Gym Leader of Viridian City. Once Giovanni’s last Pokémon, Rhydon, was defeated by Red’s Charizard, Giovanni extended an offer of the Earth Badge. Reflecting on his battle with Red, Giovanni realized that Pokémon could be enjoyed beyond business. He expressed a desire to seek a new path for himself and his Pokémon, stepping away from his role as the Boss of Team Rocket.
Pokémon Generations
In “The Chase,” Giovanni made his debut, eluding capture during a raid on the Viridian Gym by the International Police. Later, he was spotted atop a hill near Viridian City, declaring Team Rocket’s enduring presence. His cameo in “The Legacy” was seen in a flashback.

Pokémon Adventures – In this manga, Giovanni plays a similar role as in the games, with Lt. Surge, Sabrina, and Koga as his subordinates. However, he’s portrayed as more ruthless.
How I Became a Pokémon Card – Giovanni and Persian have a long-standing bond; Giovanni rescued the Pokémon when he was just a child. In this manga Giovanni’s Pokémon team consist of Persian, Diglett and Rhyhorn.
Pokémon Pocket Monsters – In this manga Giovanni holds the position of Team Rocket’s boss.
Pokémon Zensho – In the fourth chapter of this manga, PZ05, Giovanni schemes to halt Satoshi’s progress in Silph Co., but Satoshi and Sabrina thwart his plans and escape. Later, Giovanni confronts Satoshi as the final Gym Leader, but Satoshi emerges victorious, earning the Earth Badge. n this manga Giovanni’s Pokémon team consist of Nidoqueen, Rhydon, Machamp (at the Pokémon Tower), Nidoking and Kangaskhan.
