Brock is a skilled Pokémon Breeder and an aspiring Pokémon Doctor from Pewter City. Formerly the Pewter Gym Leader, Brock focused on Rock-type Pokémon, awarding the Boulder Badge to victorious Trainers.

He’s a former traveling companion of Ash, joining him in his journey through the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. Ultimately, Brock chose to pursue his dream of becoming a Pokémon Doctor, temporarily parting ways with Ash. They would later reunite in ”Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master”, continuing their journey until Brock’s eventual return home.

Pre-series

Brock’s upbringing in Pewter City is marked by responsibility and familial duty. His first Pokémon, an Onix gifted by his father Flint, kickstarted his journey into the world of Pokémon training. He participated in Little League Baseball at young age.

 

Despite Flint’s departure, Brock shoulders the responsibility of running Pewter Gym and caring for his nine younger siblings. His dedication and maturity are evident from a young age, shaping him into the responsible and caring individual he becomes.

Original series

Brock is introduced as the Pewter City Gym Leader who specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. His journey intertwines with Ash’s when the latter challenges him for the Boulder Badge. In the episode “Showdown in Pewter City” Brock awarded Ash the Boulder Badge before his father, Flint, revealed his identity and took over the Pewter Gym.

 

With his family and gym responsibilities in capable hands, Brock embarked on a journey with Ash and Misty to pursue his dream of becoming a Pokémon Breeder. Along the way, he also sought romantic connections with the many women he encountered.

 

Brock cared for a Vulpix owned by Breeder Suzie. Later in “Beauty and the Breeder” Brock reunited Vulpix with Suzie and together they participated in the Pokémon Beauty Contest held in Bonitaville.

 

During the Orange Islands saga, he briefly departed to assist Professor Ivy on Valencia Island, making only cameo appearances in the second movie. Upon returning to Kanto due to an incident, Brock later reunited with Ash and Misty as they journeyed to Johto.

 

At the conclusion of their Johto journey, Ash and his companions parted ways, with Brock returning home to assist his father as requested.

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire appearences

In Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, Brock continues his journey with Ash, traveling through the Hoenn region.

 

In “You Never Can Taillow” Brock encounters Ash and his new companions May and Max in Petalburg Woods, where they’re under attack by Taillow. After saving them, Brock reunites with Ash and expresses his desire to travel together once more, which Ash gladly agrees to. They journey through Hoenn and the Kanto Battle Frontier until Brock eventually chooses to head back home.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl appearences

In Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, Brock continues his journey with Ash and Dawn through the Sinnoh region.

 

In “Two Degrees of Separation” Brock arrives in Sinnoh via Claudina’s assistance and reunites with Ash. Originally planning to travel with Claudina, he opts to join Ash upon learning of her relationship status. Shortly after, Brock encounters Dawn, who rescued Pikachu, and she joins them on their Sinnoh journey.

 

In “The Brockster Is In!”, Brock rescues a group of Pokémon, prompting him to pursue a career as a Pokémon Doctor. Despite his desire to continue advising Ash in Unova, he chooses to stay in Kanto for further studies. After parting ways with Dawn and returning home, Brock bids farewell to Ash once more.

 

In the second special episode of Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl of the Pokémon anime, DPS02, Brock appears, revealing his dedication to studying at home and assisting at the Pewter City Pokémon Center while waiting to attend a Pokémon medical school. He plays a pivotal role in helping Forrest become the official Pewter City Gym Leader after discovering that his father failed to inform the Pokémon League of the title change.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White appearences

In Pokémon the Series: Black & White, Brock makes cameo appearances but does not play a significant role as he did in previous series.

 

In “Expedition to Onix Island!”, Brock is mentioned in a fantasy as Dawn recalls how he used to cook for her, Ash, and himself before pursuing his dream of becoming a Pokémon Doctor. He also appears in flashbacks in “The Mystery of the Missing Cubchoo!” and “The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!”, and is seen in a fantasy in “The Dream Continues!”.

 

In the the first special episode of Pokémon the Series: Black & White of the Pokémon anime, Brock is shown to have attended Pokémon medical school and is sent to Johto for apprenticeship under a Pokémon Doctor. He crosses paths with Pokémon Connoisseur Cilan in town, and after several meetings they part ways without realizing their connection through Ash.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon appearences

Brock made multiple appearances in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. Initially seen in “Alola, Kanto!”, he reunited with Ash at the Kanto airport. Throughout subsequent episodes, Brock joined forces with the group to thwart Team Rocket’s schemes.

 

In “When Regions Collide!”, the group reached Cerulean City. Brock and Misty aided Professor Kukui’s lecture on Gym battles. Brock triumphed in a Multi Battle, showcasing his Mega Steelix. After bidding farewell to Ash and his friends, they accepted an invitation to visit Alola someday.

 

In “Alola, Alola!”, Brock joined Misty on a visit to Alola, reuniting with Ash and his classmates. At the Pokémon Center, he flirted with Nurse Joy. Later, on Akala Island, Brock fell for Kahuna Olivia and they agreed to a battle. However, Team Rocket’s interference interrupted the match. Together, they thwarted Team Rocket’s plans. Eventually, Brock returned to Kanto with Misty.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series appearences

In “Destination: Coronation!”, Brock’s silhouette featured among the Kanto Gym Leaders, elucidating the Gym Leader system in the Pokémon world, echoing his role as a former Gym Leader himself.

 

In “The Arceus Chronicles (Part 2)”, Brock resurfaced, stationed at the Oreburgh City Pokémon Center with Croagunk and Blissey. Alongside Ash, Dawn, and Goh, he thwarted Team Galactic’s scheme. Later, in “Radio Lulled the Mischievous Stars!”, Brock tuned into Team Rocket’s radio show while camping.

 

Brock appears, alongside Cilan and Alexa, in the episode “Partners in Time!”, joining Ash’s Masters Eight Tournament. He interacts with Inteleon at the Cerulean Gym in “This Could be the Start of Something Big!”, reuniting with Ash in “A Fated Face-Off!”. Brock later travels to Galar with Ash and Misty in “Must Be Our Heroes and the Witch!”, assisting Ash in rescuing a Wailmer in “Ride, Lapras, Ride!”, and helping give Banette a new hair tie in “Getting to the Heart of it All!”.

 

In “Rocket Revengers!”, Brock, Ludicolo, and Croagunk aided Ash and Misty by distracting Team Rocket’s Pokémon, allowing Mime Jr. to fulfill its mission. Later, in “The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!”, Brock parted ways with Ash and Misty to return to Pewter City.

 

Brock had a cameo in the ending credits of “I Choose You!”. He also returned in “Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution” with a role similar to the original movie.

Brock’s Pokémon team typically consists of Rock-type Pokémon, reflecting his specialty as the Pewter City Gym Leader. Some of his notable Pokémon include Onix, Geodude, and Croagunk.

 

Once liberated from the confines of the Pewter Gym, Brock immersed himself in the study of diverse Pokémon care practices. In his view, articulated in ”Battling A Cute Drama!”, the essence of being a Pokémon Trainer lies in fostering a strong bond between Trainer and Pokémon.

 

Despite not prioritizing formal training sessions, Brock’s Pokémon exhibit formidable battling skills and unwavering loyalty, reflecting the deep bonds they share with him. Additionally, Brock extends his grooming expertise not only to his own Pokémon but also to those of his fellow travelers.

Brock is depicted as one of main characters in this manga , mirroring his prominence in the anime series. Although he briefly departs from the group in Let’s Save Pikachu!!, Brock reunites with Ash in The Keeper Of The Tree, Treecko!!, continuing their journey together.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu

 

Brock appears regularly in this manga as a recurring character, mirroring his role as a traveling companion of Ash and Misty in the anime series.

 

Brock initially appears in “Play Misty For Me,” where Ash challenges him for the Boulder Badge. After their battle, Ash departs Pewter City solo. Later, Brock reconnects with Ash in “Haunting My Dreams” in Saffron City. They become consistent travel partners until “The Human Race and the Pokémon Race,” after which Brock separates from Ash to prepare for the Indigo Plateau Conference.

 

Similar to the anime, Brock is the Pewter Gym Leader but takes a hiatus to journey. Unlike in the anime, he doesn’t pass control to family but shuts the Gym during his travels.

Brock achieved a remarkable feat by capturing Zubat in “Clefairy and the Moon Stone”, just one episode after his debut, making him the fastest to acquire a new Pokémon among main characters. He was also the pioneering main character to utilize Mega Evolution. Remarkably, Brock is absent in Pokémon the Series: XY, a unique occurrence in Ash’s journeys.
