Alola region
The Alola region is a tropical paradise introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon.
It is composed of four main islands: Melemele Island, Akala Island, Ula’ula Island, and Poni Island, along with a smaller artificial island known as Aether Paradise. Each island boasts diverse landscapes, including tropical jungles, volcanic craters, sandy beaches, and lush forests.
Melemele Island
Located in the northwest, it features gentle slopes and Alola’s largest settlement, Hau’oli City. Notable landmarks include Ten Carat Hill and the Ruins of Conflict.
Akala Island
Positioned in the northeast, it houses Alola’s only active volcano in Wela Volcano Park. Heahea City is its largest city, known for its resort hotels. Notable landmarks include Brooklet Hill and Lush Jungle.
Ula’ula Island
The largest island in the southeast, it boasts varied terrain and weather. Malie City is the largest settlement, alongside Tapu Village and Po Town. Landmarks include the Lake of the Moone and the Lake of the Sunne.
Poni Island
Located in the southwest, it is sparsely populated with rugged terrain. Ancient Poni Path and Seafolk Village are notable locations. Vast Poni Canyon dominates the landscape. Exeggutor Island is accessible from Seafolk Village.
Additionally, Aether Paradise, west of the archipelago, serves as the headquarters of the Aether Foundation, contrasting with the natural islands with its modern facilities and mansion residence of its head, Lusamine.
In the Alola region, each island’s kahuna traditionally offers the first partner Pokémon to beginner Trainers. In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Melemele Island’s kahuna, Hala, presents Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio options. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Professor Kukui, representing Hala, offers the same three Pokémon on behalf of Hala.
The Alola region boasts a tropical climate, with lush rainforests and unique adaptations among its Pokémon. For instance, Exeggutor on Poni Island grow to extraordinary lengths due to abundant sunlight. Despite the warmth, Mount Lanakila experiences snow and hail. Each island features diverse weather patterns, from scorching sun to sandstorms and rain. Exeggutor Island is known for frequent rain showers, occasionally resulting in spectacular rainbows or meteor showers.
Alola’s culture is deeply rooted in the spirit of aloha, emphasizing community, respect, and harmony with nature. The region’s inhabitants, known as Alolans, embrace traditions such as island challenges, festivals like the annual Alola Pokémon League Expo, and the practice of Z-Moves—a unique form of Pokémon battling.
Alola is home to a wide variety of Pokémon species, including many unique to the region. Notable among these are Alolan forms, which are variations of Pokémon adapted to Alola’s environment and often possess different typings and abilities compared to their counterparts from other regions.
Occasionally, mysterious and powerful Pokémon known as Ultra Beasts appear in Alola. These extradimensional creatures pose a threat to the region’s stability and are the subject of research by Aether Foundation and other organizations.
Alola is home to legendary Pokémon like Solgaleo and Lunala, the cover legendaries of Pokémon Sun and Moon, respectively. Additionally, the region features guardian deities—Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini—that watch over the islands and play significant roles in local lore.
Instead of traditional Pokémon Gyms, Alola features Trial Captains who oversee trials for aspiring trainers. Trainers must complete these trials, which often involve tasks like battling and puzzle-solving, to earn Z-Crystals. Each island also has a Kahuna, a powerful trainer who serves as a guardian and leader respected by the locals.
Aether Foundation is a prominent organization dedicated to Pokémon conservation and research. Led by President Lusamine, Aether Foundation operates the Aether Paradise, a facility devoted to the care and study of Pokémon. However, their true motives and activities become central to the region’s storyline.
Trainers in Alola embark on Island Challenges, a rite of passage that replaces traditional Pokémon Gym battles. These challenges consist of trials administered by Trial Captains and culminate in battles against powerful Totem Pokémon and island Kahunas.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the Alola region establishes its Pokémon League. Trainers can compete in Elite Four battles and challenge the Champion to become the region’s Champion themselves, adding a traditional element to Alola’s unique culture of island challenges.
